El Toro Mexican Restaurant Opens in Puyallup

Visit El Toro Mexican Restaurant & Cantina at their new location, 12115 Canyon Road E. in Puyallup.

It’s official, after years of anticipation: El Toro Mexican Restaurant and Cantina is open for business on Canyon Road E. in Puyallup.

Stepping into the restaurant is like walking into a lively Spanish hacienda, featuring warm yellow walls with teal accents, steer heads and red brick archways. The booths feature deep leather seats and rich wood tables, with lively depicitions of bull riders adorning the walls.

This is the sixth restaurant for the local chain, founded by Rueben Arias Sr., who hails from the rural Mexican town of Cuaurla, Jalisco. His first restaurant in Lakewood opened in 1979. The Puyallup location is the first custom built El Toro.

Fans of El Toro can expect to find the same menu at the new location—burritos, menudo, tacos, fajitas and more—but may not have known their favorite dishes lightened up. El Toro recently decided to start offering healthier Mexican fare, with no MSG or lard in the refried beans, and foods seasoned with sea salt and olive, vegetable and canola oils.

El Toro is a family business, with Ruben Arias Jr. handling daily operations across the locations, and Ray Arias managing the Canyon location. The two Arias sisters, Marcela and Angelica, work there too.

Personally, I am very excited for a new El Toro, because I have known the Arias family almost my whole life. Marcela and I went through elementary and high school together, and I’ve always considered her a great friend! They are a wonderful family who know all the secrets to amazingly flavorful food!

Welcome to Puyallup, El Toro!
