Thanks to community support and donations from local businesses, Christmas came early for the family of Jacoby Miles, the teen gymnast paralyzed after a devestating fall last month.
LookLarson.com, Kersey Mobility and Vantage Mobility presented a 2012 Toyota Sienna van to the Miles family on Dec. 7 at Children’s Hospital in Seattle. The ADA equipped vehicle was a total surprise!
The Puyallup native and Ballou Junior High School student was left paralyzed from the mid-chest down after she landed on her neck on a routine dismount off the uneven/parallel bars Nov. 16. The oldest of six children, doctors say it will be a miracle if she walks again, but hopeful she can regain use of her hands.
Looklarson.com donated the cypress colored van, and Kersey Mobility in Sumner and Vantage Mobility added the lift, making the vehicle accessible for Jacoby.
According to Melanie Roach of Roach Gymnastics, the van is worth approximately $30,000 and the ADA lift is worth approximately $25,000.
Support Jacoby at a special auction dinner in her honor on Dec. 17 at the Temple Theatre in Tacoma. U.S. Olympians, TV and radio personalities and local dignitaries will be on-hand to help entertain and support the auction, with all proceeds benefitting Miles’ medical and rehabilitation expenses. Tickets are available at www.goteamjacoby.com.
