Pierce Transit Board Votes to Revoke Service Cuts

Despite some hesitations from board members and local residents, the board agreed that its priority is to provide transportation to the public.

Pierce County residents can take a sigh of relief...for now.

The Pierce Transit Board of Commissioners voted unanimously on Wednesday to rescind the 28-percent service reductions that would have taken effect this September, according to The News Tribune.

While missing three of its 10 members, the board took the vote at its special meeting in Lakewood based on Pierce Transit's higher-than-expected sales tax growth.

According to the Washington State Department of Revenue sales tax data, Pierce Transit sales tax collections averaged higher-than-expected for the first four months of this year.

If collections continue at this rate, the agency's sales tax revenue would show an 11-percent growth for the 2013 budget cycle, Pierce Transit said.

Despite some hesitations from board members and local residents on whether the short-term data provided enough justification, the board agreed that its priority is to provide transportation to the public, the TNT reported.

The board is expected to readdress the issue next year for the 2015 budget-setting process.
