Josh Powell’s Brother Apparently Commits Suicide in Minneapolis

Former Puyallup resident Michael C. Powell, 30, jumped out of a building to his death in downtown Minneapolis, media outlets report. He was a graduate student at the University of Minnesota.

One of Josh Powell’s siblings has apparently committed suicide today, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.

Michael C. Powell, 30, jumped from a multi-story parking garage in downtown Minneapolis, located close to his residence. The University of Minnesota confirmed he was a graduate student there, working on a doctoral degree in cognitive science.

Michael, who grew up in South Hill, was a strong supporter of his older brother Josh, who killed himself and his two sons in a house fire he intentionally set in Graham just over a year ago. Josh Powell was also the only person of interest in the disappearance of his wife, Susan Cox Powell, who was last at the couples’ home in West Valley City in Utah.

Michael also stood by his father, Steven, who is currently serving a prison sentence for voyeurism in Monroe. He will be released this May.

Most recently, Michael, his siblings and mother have been in a legal battle with Chuck and Judy Cox over millions of dollars in insurance policies for Susan Cox and sons Charlie, 7 and Braden, 5. (Read more on Kiro 7.)

Michael had an aspiration for politics, and once ran to be state representative of District 2 in Washington and once served as a Democratic Delegate for Pres. Barack Obama, according to his profile on VoteWA.com.

He served in the U.S. Army until he was honorably discharged in 2007 and also worked at a Kroger warehouse in Puyallup.

Tragic

Tragic that one disgusting and troubled "man" can impact so many generations and innocent lives. Hopefully he won't get out prison anytime soon, he doesn't seem to contribute anything productive to the Washington.

Steven Powell will be released from prison in May of this year...

I don't know Michael Powell, but from the article he served his country, worked hard and served his community. He may have supported family members that did not deserve it but then many other families do the same. I don't think this poor man's life should be defined by people he is related to more than his own life and service. Unless someone can point to a crime this man committed, his loss is indeed tragic.

Sounds like he was as crazy as his brother and father. No tragic loss IMHO.
