Puyallup Police Reports: 8 Drunk Drivers Arrested on Saturday Night, Reckless Driver Severs Power Pole

The following arrest and crime information from Feb. 16, 2013 to Feb. 27, 2013 has been provided by the Puyallup Police Department.

FEB. 16, 2013

DUIs: In all, Puyallup PD made 8 DUI arrests throughout Puyallup on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013. One man was stopped for driving the wrong way on 3rd St. SE, others were pulled over by speeding.

Hit and Run/DUI: A Puyallup officer was driving on the freeway when he observed a van smoking heavily and traveling along the road with no headlights. He also saw a complete bumper assembly in the roadway. He caught up with the car as it exited the off-ramp to Pioneer. WSP determined that the driver had struck multiple feet of cable barrier near the 7th Ave. overpass and fled the scene just prior to being spotted by Puyallup PD. The driver was arrested for DUI.

FEB. 18, 2013

Reckless Driving: A car traveling westbound from 5th St. NE somehow went into a spin and severed a power pole. Power was out all the way to 11th St. NW at the sub station and north of the tracks, plus pockets of outages across the north side of town. Power was out until the late morning while crews repaired the damage. Officers say both the 20-year-old JBLM driver and his passenger walked away from what looked like a fatality accident. The driver was not impaired, but was not truthful about what happened.

Shoplifting: A 16-year-old was arrested for stealing over $200 worth in merchandise from Walmart.

FEB. 21, 2013

Kiosk Burglary: A male subject entered the Activate Cellular kiosk in the South Hill Mall and stole 20 cell phones totaling over $11,000. The suspect is described as possibly Asian or Pacific Islander, about 5 feet 9 inches tall and 170 pounds, wearing a dark green jacket and a red Cincinnati Reds ball cap.

Liquor Theft: Two men stole liquor bottles from Safeway. After reviewing the footage, a Puyallup officer was able to locate on of them on the 200 block of W. Main.

Vehicle Prowl: A bag containing a T-shirt and some cookies was stolen from a car in the Macy’s parking lot, via smashed window.

FEB. 22, 2013

Retail Theft: Puyallup Police responded to a theft in progress at Walmart. Officers were able to detain three individuals and the fourth was chased out of the store and eventually captured. They were all charged with theft, plus the shoplifting of cigarettes, which the suspects committed earlier in the day.

Vehicle Prowl: A witness saw a vehicle prowl in the YMCA parking lot. The suspects were tracked down by police and were found to be convicted felons and violent offenders, and both had escape warrants from the Department of Corrections.

Possession of a Dangerous Weapon: A driver was stopped for failing to transfer the title of his vehicle. He had a suspended license and a pair of brass knuckles in his pocket.

Suspicious House Fire: Investigators are searching for the cause of a house fire on the 2000 block of 15th St. SE. Police arrived to find the fire fully involved. The lone occupant of the home was outside yelling for help; he told police his dog alerted him to the fire. He jumped off the second story balcony to escape and broke several ribs. It is not believed the dog made it out.

Residential Burglary: A home on 31st Ave. SE was burglarized; intruders entered through a large doggie door.

DUI: A man was stopped after driving over several curbs to get through the Burger King drive-thru. He did a burnout to get back on to River Road. He had a blood-alcohol rate that was three times the legal limit.

DUI-Drugs: A man was stopped for failing to yield to the right of way and for nearly colliding with a police officer, who was pulling out of a gas station on S. Meridian. The suspect admitted to smoking marijuana prior to driving.

FEB. 23, 2013

Violation Order: A man was arrested after he contacted his wife, by leaving her a voicemail saying “I love you” and texting her the same. There was a no-contact order between the two.

DUI, Warrant Arrest: A man was stopped for driving in darkness without headlights. He had a suspended license and his passenger had a DUI warrant. Both were arrested.

DUI: A driver was pulled over for tailgating, driving with his headlights off and lane travel on the 2700 block of E. Main Ave. He was found to be impaired.

FEB. 25, 2013

Residential Burglary/Vandalism: A home on 21st St. SE was vandalized, possibly by the former remodelers. The current contractor heard noises when he arrived to the property in the morning and the suspects went out the back door. Paint was strewn all over the house, windows were broken out, doors were damaged, appliances were broken and more, totaling over $14,000 in damage. 

FEB. 26, 2013

Mail Theft: Residents of the Meridian Mobile Home estates have reported mail theft.

Theft of Cell Phone: A woman reported that her cell phone was stolen from her stroller at the South Hill Mall.

FEB. 27, 2013

Hit and Run: A driver struck a vehicle on 9th St. SW and 7th Ave. SW then fled on a flat rear tire, finally dumping the van at the Motel Puyallup. A tip that the suspect was at the Northwest Motor Inn led to the man’s arrest for injury hit and run, driving with a suspended license and an outstanding warrant.

Fraud: A Puyallup resident became victim to a phone scam when someone called and told her she won $2.5 million from Publisher’s Clearinghouse. She was told to purchase $1500 worth of prepaid visa gift cards, then tell the callers the numbers. She did so, and is now out $1500.

Commercial Burglary: Over $4,000 worth of metal pads and belts was stolen overnight from a business on 23rd St. SE. Similar items were brought in to a nearby recycling plant that weekend.
