Army Will Seek Death Penalty For Accused Afghanistan Shooter Robert Bales of JBLM

The New York Times is reporting that the military court will consider charges - including 16 counts of premeditated murder - tied to a predawn shooting spree in March.

The Army plans to seek the death penalty against accused Afghanistan shooter Staff Sgt. Robert Bales.

The New York Times reported that the Army is seeking the punishment, although no trial date is set for Bales - a Lake Tapps man who's assigned to Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

The 39-year-old faces numerous charges, or specifications, including 16 counts of premeditated murder and wounding another six people. He’s also accused of possessing and using steroids.

During the pre-trial portion of his Article 32 hearing in early November, Army prosecutors tried to portray that Bales carried out the attack in cold, deliberate fashion.

His defense argued that multiple deployments, alcohol and stress contributed to his role in the shootings.

Here's Patch's previous coverage:

  • First Day of Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales' Hearing Contains Chilling Testimony
  • ROBERT BALES TRIAL: "I Thought I Was Doing The Right Thing"

The New York Times is reporting that although the Army is seeking the death penalty, legally it's an uphill battle.

What do you think, Patch users? Do you think Bales, who's assigned to the post in our back yard, should face the death penalty based on the evidence presented?

The army sends a man with PTSD and a known brain injury back to a war zone, and on heavy steroid meds and drugs and they are surprised by what happens? They want the death penalty to cover up their culpability in this matter. I have worked for doctors who do not send patients back to work in regular desk jobs with these types of injuries, let alone a damn war zone -- this is horrible.

James on Facebook said: "It's the Army's fault, they created him and now that he's broken, instead of fixing him there going to dismantle him... Sad on all levels."

Death Penalty for him and the Doctor at Ft Hood is getting what? This country has gone completely upside down. I served 22 years as a Special Opns Soldier and I've NEVER in my life seen or ever heard of the underhanded crap going on like it is now! This administration has enabled absolute bedlam to hide the real problem. Why doesn't he use the Clinton excuse, either one of them, the Sex excuse or the Concussion excuse and possibly he could either walk or get a retrial? Create them and bury them, it's sad.
