Give Jacoby Miles' Puyallup Home an 'Extreme Makeover' on Tuesday

The public is invited to an extreme makeover ceremony of Jacoby Miles’ home at 8 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 11.

Located at 13102 89th Ave. East in Puyallup, the Miles' South Hill home is being remodeled through generous donations and community support to accommodate the 15-year-old’s physical requirements.

The Puyallup native and Ballou Junior High School student was left paralyzed from the mid-chest down after she landed on her neck on a routine dismount off the uneven/parallel bars Nov. 16. The oldest of six children, doctors say it will be a miracle if she walks again, but they're hopeful she can regain the use of her hands.

“The entire community came together to make this remodel possible for the Miles family. Countless companies and volunteers donated their time, materials and labor,” said Tim Baublitz, project coordinator for the remodel. “The Miles family is overwhelmed and ecstatic by the outpouring support of the community. It is very emotional for the family and all of us.”

According to Baublitz, Daniels Construction, Legends Roofing, Parr Lumber, LP Building Products, Hourglass Construction, Northwest Cascade Construction, Gale Contracting Services, Milgard Windows, Foundation Specialists, Zetterberg homes, Boone Electric, Tape Material Handling, M & C Drywall, GPS, Brundage Bone Concrete Pumping, Macam Flooring, Parr Cabinet Outlet, Corliss Resources, Ski’s Painting and Pro-Build Truss are some of the vendors who have generously donated their labor, time and materials to this project. Other companies are still donating their services and materials and a list was not available at press time.

The renovation to the Miles’ home includes adding an ADA accessible bedroom and bath for Jacoby, as well a walk-in closet. A new master bedroom and bath is being added for her parents, Gretchen and Jason.

“The kitchen will have new appliances that can accommodate Jacoby’s wheelchair and a prep sink that she can access. Jacoby likes to bake,” Baublitz said.  “In addition, new appliances will be easy for to Jacoby to get at and her bedroom will also have a lift to get her in and out of bed.”

According to Baublitz, the addition is approximately 1,300 square feet and worth approximately $75,000. The doors are being widened for Jacoby’s wheelchair, and the garage is being modified to house her new wheelchair accessible van.

The remodel is set to be completed Dec. 23 so the family can be back home for Christmas.

A South Hill family generously donated a house for the Miles family to live in while their home is being remodeled.

In addition, U.S. Olympians, TV and radio personalities and local dignitaries showcase the VIPs attending a dinner and auction to benefit paralyzed gymnast Miles Dec. 17 at the Temple Theatre in Tacoma.  All proceeds from this event benefit Miles’ medical and rehabilitation expenses.
