Should Advertising Be Allowed in Puyallup Schools?

The Puyallup School Board is weighing the options and impacts of funding new stadiums or equipment with business advertising.

Should ad space be available in Puyallup schools?

The Puyallup School Board is currently debating whether funding opportunities for new facilities and equipment should be opened up to commercial advertising, or business sponsorships.

The district’s chief operations officer, Rudy Fyles, told The Tacoma News Tribune that the Board hasn't made any decisions yet, but that there is a consensus among board members that advertising doesn't have a place in Puyallup's school hallways. However, they are open to ideas about scoreboard sponsorships or naming rights for future athletic fields or stadiums.

After the facilities bond failed during the last election, advertising or sponsorships could fund much-needed district improvements, like a new athletic stadium at Rogers High School. But, groups like the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood argues that advertising on school property means capturing an active audience of young potential buyers, which could imply school endorsement of the advertised products.
