Steve Powell to be Released from Prison Next Month

Susan Powell's father-in-law is expected to be released from prison in Monroe on May 23, after serving a 2-and-a-half year sentence for voyeurism.

Steve Powell is expected to be released from prison next month after serving a two-and-a-half year sentence for vouyerism, for videotaping two underage girls in the bathroom, who lived next door to him in his South Hill neighborhood.

He is expected to be released May 23 from the Monroe Corrections Complex. He began serving his sentence in June 2012.

A Monroe corrections officer told The Seattle Times that many offenders similar to Powell get reduced sentences due to good behavior, but wouldn't comment speciflcally on Powell's early release.

Sarah Slack, founder of the TEARS Foundation and Powell neighbor, told KOMO that his release will be difficult for the community, which has already endured so much.

"What he could be capable of is a major concern for us and our community. Our safety, our children's safety, we live near a school," Slack told KOMO.

The Department of Justice has not yet detemined if Powell will be allowed to return to Puyallup.
